Pregnancy complication research projects
There are specific diseases that can cause complications during and after pregnancy. Discover our research projects on pregnancy complications here.
Obesity
Pregnancy in severely obese women: the Edinburgh Antenatal Metabolic Clinic
Women who are obese have a greater risk of developing complications during pregnancy, and obesity may also affect the long-term health of the baby.
Pre-eclampsia
NifeDipine or Labetalol for treating existing high blood pressure during pregnancy (the PANDA study)
Tommy’s is supporting an early trial into finding the best way to treat pregnant women with high blood pressure without harming mother or baby.
Pre-eclampsia
PARROT : using placental growth factor to tell if women are at high risk of pre-eclampsia complications
Tommy's researchers are looking at whether a simple blood test can identify women at risk of severe complications from pre-eclampsia.
Pregnancy complication research
The DESiGN trial: Does the Growth Assessment Protocol (GAP) find the small babies that are at risk?
Tommy's wants to find out if changing the way we assess fetal growth can tell us which small babies are at risk and help us to reduce the chances of stillbirth.
Other research
Understanding how severe mental illness affects women during pregnancy
We don’t know enough about how severe mental illness, and the drugs used to treat them, affect women during pregnancy. Tommy’s is trying to change this.
Other research
Does maternal age affect the timing and ease of birth?
Studies have shown that the womb may not work as well in older women. This may be because the muscle produces less energy so contractions are less effective.
Pregnancy complication research
Developing a training simulator for amniocentesis
Tommy’s researchers helped to create a model that lets medical staff practice carrying out this diagnostic test to make it safer for mother and baby.
Other research
Recreational running in pregnancy (SPORT)
From studying 1,300 women, Tommy's researchers found that running for fun is safe and can be recommended as a way to stay fit during pregnancy.
Obesity
Metformin doesn’t affect fat distribution in mother or baby
In part of the EMPOWaR study, Tommy's researchers found that taking metformin during pregnancy doesn't change how fat is stored in the babies of obese women.
