Pregnancy after weight-loss surgery
After we got married in 2009, my husband and I started trying for a family straightaway. After a year of trying, I went to see my GP who referred me for more investigations.
I was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome and had a cyst in my left fallopian tube. I was put on metformin and advised to lose weight. I’d always had issues with my weight since school and really struggled. Doctors wanted to remove the tube but because of my weight I was told that the risks were too high.
This devastated me. I went back to my GP who referred me to a weight management team. I was referred for surgery and had a gastric bypass. I lost 7 stone in less than 12 months, finally had a healthy BMI and I started having regular periods again.
I saw my consultant again and had my tube removed. 3 months later I found out I was pregnant with my daughter. I was monitored regularly, had a good pregnancy with no complications, and had a natural delivery.
I gained weight during pregnancy, but I soon lost it again after my daughter was born. I had a similar experience for my second pregnancy.
I would say to others, take any advice you're given, especially regarding taking the appropriate amount of folic acid and multivitamins. Also, try not to focus too much on the circumstances around your pregnancy, and just enjoy it!
