Our research projects
Thanks to our supporters we are able to carry out more than £2m worth of ground-breaking research every year in 4 centres across the UK, into the causes of miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth. Discover our research projects here.
Stillbirth research
The AFFIRM trial for prevention of stillbirth
Researchers supported by Tommy’s are looking at whether a package of care and resources for pregnant women can help stop stillbirths.
Stillbirth research
Viagra: is it an effective treatment for stillbirth (STRIDER)
Viagra works by increasing blood flow. Fetal growth restriction is often caused by poor flow of blood through the placenta. This trial is looking at whether Viagra is effective in increasing blood flow to the baby.
Premature birth research
Using an abdominal stitch to reduce preterm birth
women receiving an abdominal stitch instead of a vaginal stitch were more likely to have a baby that survived, and less likely to give birth before 32 weeks.
Premature birth research
STOPPIT-2: can the Arabin pessary prevent premature birth in twin pregnancies?
Tommy’s Edinburgh centre took part in a national trial that found that the Arabin pessary did not lower preterm birth for high-risk women pregnant with twins.
Premature birth research
Predicting premature labour using the body’s natural defences
Tommy's researchers have found that a natural substance made in the vagina and cervix could help us tell whether a woman will go into early labour.
Premature birth research
The QUIPP app: helping doctors decide who is at risk of premature birth
Researchers in Tommy’s Prematurity Clinic are helping develop an app that will reduce unnecessary hospital admissions for women with symptoms of preterm labour.
Premature birth research
Using ultrasound to diagnose infections during pregnancy
Research taking place in Tommy’s Edinburgh centre has shown that ultrasound is a promising way of detecting infection early.
Premature birth research
Finding out who’s at risk: how can we predict preterm labour?
Researchers supported by Tommy’s are building a tool for women with symptoms of preterm labour to work out how likely they are to give birth early.
Pre-eclampsia
The SCOPE study - an international search for answers
The SCOPE study is a huge international study looking at how to predict and prevent complications in late pregnancy such as pre-eclampsia and preterm birth.
