Other supplements in pregnancy
There are 2 vitamins that are very important in pregnancy and that are recommended to take as a supplement: folic acid and vitamin D.
If you are anaemic, you may need an iron supplement too. Anaemia is a blood condition that develops when you do not have enough healthy red blood cells.
A healthy, balanced diet will give you most of the vitamins and minerals you need during pregnancy. But there are some supplements you should have.
Folic acid and vitamin D
Folic acid helps your baby’s nervous system to develop. Vitamin D helps build your baby’s bones, teeth, kidneys, heart and nervous system.

Iron
If your blood tests show that you are anaemic in pregnancy, your doctor or midwife will give you an iron supplement. Otherwise, you do not need to take an iron supplement in pregnancy. Find out more about iron in pregnancy.
Other supplements in pregnancy
There is no need to take any other vitamin and mineral supplements unless your GP prescribes them.
Some people like to take pregnancy multivitamins, which is fine. They tend to be more expensive than buying the ones you need separately, however.
They may be helpful if you’re vegan or follow a restricted diet. If you have any concerns about your diet, talk to your midwife or GP.
If you take any other vitamins make sure they are suitable for pregnancy. Do not take vitamin A (retinol) supplements, or any supplements containing vitamin A. Too much vitamin A could harm your baby.
