Stylist and Tommy's launch Every Loss Counts campaign

We’re partnering with Stylist on a new campaign to change the public conversation around miscarriage and baby loss and improve care for all women and birthing people affected.

Experiencing a miscarriage is hard, but talking about it can be even harder. Despite an estimated 1 in 5 pregnancies ending in miscarriage, it’s still largely hidden from our day to day lives.

Around 200,000 miscarriages happen each year – but we still don’t know the true scale because crucially, we’re not counting.

Tommy’s has been calling on the Government to commit to recording all miscarriages, so we can get parents the research and support they desperately need and transform care for women and birthing people across the UK.

We’re delighted to partner on Stylist’s Every Loss Counts campaign to amplify our message to Westminster and drive change further, and faster, by challenging society’s view of miscarriage as an inevitable part of pregnancy.

We don’t agree with the notion that baby loss and pregnancy complications are 'just one of those things'. Right now, our research is finding the answers to stop preventable baby loss and is giving more families the chance to take a healthy baby home. In fact, 24,000 women and birthing people a year access treatment, support and have the opportunity to participate in pioneering research trials through our own specialist research clinics.

We know language matters. Without open conversations around miscarriage, we minimise the devastation it causes and make it harder for people to access the right care and support, especially in the workplace.

50% of people will be affected by baby loss during their lifetime, either personally or through someone they know. This is why it’s critical we make sure every loss counts and why we are so passionate about working together with Stylist to drive much-needed change.

Every Loss Counts – campaign aims

Lead the conversation

Stylist have set up the Every Loss Counts hub, hosting free, expert-led advice and real lived experience stories to help people to navigate pregnancy loss themselves or support a loved one who has been affected.

Put pressure on government

We will work with Stylist to meet with the new Labour Government to demand that they reintroduce the Miscarriage Leave Bill which was dropped during the last Parliament, and hold Labour to account on improving women’s healthcare.

Demand an official record of miscarriage

Currently, all miscarriages are not recorded by the NHS. Stylist will be amplifying our call for every pregnancy loss to be counted to better inform healthcare. You can add your name to our petition here.

Encourage more empathetic workplaces

Stylist have committed to signing up 100 businesses to Tommy’s Pregnancy and Parenting at Work accreditation scheme by March 2025.

Meena Alexander, Stylist's associate editor, said: "If an estimated 1 in 4 pregnancies end in loss, why do so many women feel utterly alone in it? This is the question Stylist has been asking repeatedly over the past few months, as we've heard from women across the country whose lives have been touched by miscarriage and baby loss.

For every tale of amazing care someone had received, it was matched by an injustice. It was the friend whose boss had demanded they return to the office the next day. It was the cold, throwaway language someone used that still feels like a gut punch years later. It was the loneliness, the feeling of being dismissed, the sense that no one really wanted to talk about the pain they were going through.

"Stylist believes everyone deserves better. We believe that miscarriage and baby loss should be part of the cultural conversation, not something that’s shrouded in secrecy or shame. We believe that workplaces can be transformed into places of kindness, understanding and proper support. We believe that our politicians must prioritise women’s healthcare, and really listen to what they need.

"This is why Stylist is launching Every Loss Counts, a campaign to make sure no one has to navigate miscarriage or baby loss feeling alone ever again.

We’re delighted to work alongside Tommy’s, a charity that’s been working tirelessly to save lives and create positive change for so long, and to help them amplify an issue that impacts millions of lives.
